$800M

Ro Filipe Qaraniqio Tuisawau holds one of the largest portfolios in the coalition government. The Ministry of Public Works received the largest single allocation in the 2025–2026 National Budget: $800 million, an increase of $83 million on the previous year. Of that, $388 million went to the Fiji Roads Authority. The ministry also reported allocations of $31.7 million for rural road upgrades, $12 million for jetty rehabilitation, and a $7 million Resource Owners Fund to support landowning communities contributing land for national infrastructure — figures sourced from the Ministry of Public Works.

Before entering politics, Tuisawau served as president of the Fiji Rugby Union and worked for the South Pacific Tourism Organisation. He is from the Tuisawau clan of Rewa Province. In July 2021 he was detained by police alongside other opposition MPs during the Bainimarama government's suppression of dissent over a proposed land bill. He moved to the People's Alliance ahead of the 2022 election.

What to watch

Tuisawau is now Deputy Leader of the People's Alliance and Leader of Government Business — one of the most senior figures in the coalition. As the election approaches, his infrastructure record will be central to the coalition's pitch to voters outside Suva. The outstanding question is whether ministerial delivery matches the scale of the budget his portfolio has received.

The ministry also reported allocations of $31.7 million for rural road upgrades, $12 million for jetty rehabilitation, and a $7 million Resource Owners Fund to support landowning communities contributing land for national infrastructure. These figures are sourced from Ministry of Public Works press releases and have not been independently verified.

By the end of the third quarter of 2024–2025, Tuisawau reported confidence in achieving around 90 per cent of his ministry's targets for the year. The Fiji Roads Authority completed nine critical bridges under the Bridge Replacement Programme. Major arterial roads, including the Queens and Kings Roads, were rehabilitated to climate-resilient standards (FBC News, June 2024).

Tuisawau has also cleared a significant governance backlog, completing and finalising long-outstanding annual reports dating from 2019–2020 to 2023–2024, describing it as a key step in strengthening accountability under the coalition government (FBC News).

His standing as a member of the Tuisawau family, holders of the Roko Tui Dreketi title, gives him weight in iTaukei affairs beyond his ministerial brief. His specific installed title is not confirmed in the public record.

What to Watch

Tuisawau is now Deputy Leader of the People's Alliance and Leader of Government Business in Parliament — making him one of the most senior figures in the coalition. As the election approaches, his infrastructure record will be central to the coalition's pitch to voters outside Suva.
